The event, held this year from July 14th to July 19th, showcases new choreographic talent from across the globe. The Cuomo Foundation has been the competitions ‘principal financial partner' since 2019.
The Premio Roma Danza is an annual international dance competition organized by the Accademia Nazionale di Danza and the Italian ministries of Culture and University and Research. This years edition was curated and run by the newly appointed artistic creative director of the Academy, Anna Maria Galeotti.
It focuses on two types of choreographic compositions: live performances and dance combined with digital technologies. The competition aims to support and promote young creators, directors, and video makers of dance by providing them with visibility, opportunities for collaboration, and support for their artistic and research endeavours. The Choreography section is open to candidates 18 and older, while the Videodance section is open to candidates 16 and older.
This year's winners were determined by an international jury chaired by Tobias Ehinger, general manager of Theater Dortmund, Germany. The jury included Beate Vollack, director of ballet at the Théâtre National du Capitole de Toulouse, France; Roberto Scafati, choreographer and artistic director of Theater Trier, Germany; Carlos Manuel Prado, director of the Companhia Nacional de Bailado, Portugal, and Stefano Tomassini, the Italian professor and dance critic.
The choreographers Guido Sarli (president of the jury), Fiorenza D'Alessandro (an artistic director and choreographer), and Marinella Guatterini (professor of dance aesthetics, essayist, and critic) were given the task of evaluating the Videodance segment.
